Feature Friday: Summer Reading - or Listening!

Whether you've got a road trip to the mountains, a beach vacation, weekday afternoons at the pool with your kiddos, or simply some extra work travel planned for this summer, I've got you covered. Download Audible immediately if you haven't already and experience the life changing magic that can happen via your earbuds even if you're just at home on a Sunday tackling that mountain of clean laundry piled on the guest bed (just me?).

I think I downloaded Audible a year or more ago but never fully realized it's awesomeness until I looked around one day and realized how many books I had purchased with full intent to read... yet I had either read a few chapters or not even cracked the damn thing open. I have SO many books and I'm ashamed to say they are literally collecting dust on bookshelves throughout my house. It's embarrassing. I simply had gotten so busy with work and kid and husband and LIFE that I just didn't have time to open a book - or dare I say - it wasn't a priority. At the end of the day, I didn't want to relax in bed with a book, I wanted to curl up on the couch with my hubby and a glass of wine and some good conversation, since that's pretty much all the time we get these days.

I should probably preface the rest of this post with a disclaimer that I prefer books of the motivational, business-y, self-improvement-y sort as opposed to fiction. If you're in the same boat, keep reading!

It all started when a client recommended the book The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer. I knew this was a book I would likely fall asleep trying to read (no offense, it's just that at the end of a day of bouncing between multiple conversations at work, my brain can only take so much deep thought!), so I decided to download it on Audible and listen to it while on early morning walks with my dog. It was a great way to start my mornings, but honestly, this was just the beginning of my Audible obsession!

One Sunday afternoon, as I was prepping some hair (yes, coloring extensions at home on my dining room table), I was in the mood to listen to something but was bored with Pandora and Spotify, and since Lennon was at my mom's for the day and Tim was playing golf, it was the perfect opportunity to not only get some work done around the house but also listen to a book at the same time. At the recommendation of a colleague, I downloaded Girl Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis. YOU GUYS. It was SO GOOD! It was the perfect motivational, story-telling, feel good book that jump-started me into living my best life again. My favorite part is probably the last five minutes of the book, when the author sums it all up with a quote from Glinda the Good Witch: "You've always had the power, Dorothy, you just had to learn it for yourself!" DEFINITELY get this book if you need a jolt of caffeine to stop any sort of personal pity party and get out there and start making your life amazing!

The next book I downloaded was The 5-Second Rule by Mel Robbins, and it has seriously been the biggest game-changer for me. This book is is what gets me out of bed in the morning. Literally. Using the 5-Second Rule, I've changed my habit of hitting snooze 47 times and I actually jump out of bed in the morning when my alarm goes off... at 4:45am. I've used the rule to get back into writing, get more organized with work, and it's how I'm getting more shit done left and right with no more procrastination day in and day out. It. Is. Incredible. Download this one IMMEDIATELY if you're ready to make changes, take action, and take back control of your life!

With a family vacation on the horizon, I've downloaded a few more to listen to not only on the road but also while my little tadpole plays in the tide pools and I'm working on my tan!

Highly recommended by a friend: A Tribe Called Bliss by Lori Harder. Truth be told, I'm actually a few chapters in already because I couldn't wait for my trip, and daaayyyummmmm, this is a book I listen to in the car and even when I pull in my driveway, I have to sit there a few minutes because I legit don't want to stop listening! I'm hooked and can't wait to get deeper into it!

Another actual physical hardcover book collecting dust on my bookshelf is Start With Why by Simon Sinek. We've had this one for years since my days of working at lululemon (it was a company-recommended read), I'm pretty sure my husband has read it, and although I've listened to his TedTalk half a dozen times, I've never actually read this book. With the opening of Heyday Collective in our near future, I've been wanting to dig deeper and really hone in on my "why" of supporting, empowering, and uplifting women as I start this business. I cannot wait to listen to this one.

Your turn! What are some of your favorite books, whether hard copy or audio? Do you have plans to crack into something new this summer? Let me know if you've read any of the ones I've listed above, and if you have any recommendations!

Cheers,
