Feature Friday: Bulletproof for Brains + Beauty

Today we're talking supps, folks, and by supps I mean supplements, namely, all the drugs I put in my morning coffee. Not drugs. Come on, it was a joke. Try to keep up.

If you follow me on Instagram you might've seen my Story yesterday which included a lineup of all the supplements I use to make a Bulletproof coffee every morning. (Side note: If you follow me on Insta you ALSO know that I have a love-hate-LOOOVE relationship with coffee. Making it Bulletproof is pretty much the only way I can enjoy it without feeling like a complete jittery spaz by the time I finish my cup.) If you Google or Pinterest search "bulletproof coffee" you'll come across probably at least a dozen recipes, but the general theme is that it's a warm morning beverage made by blending hot coffee with MCT (medium chain triglyceride) Oil and another fat (butter, coconut butter, cacao butter, hemp seeds, etc).

Personally, my reasons for drinking Bulletproof coffee are twofold. By blending my coffee with XCT Oil and cacao butter, I not only get a solid dose of high-quality fat that keeps me satiated til dinnertime, but I also experience sustained energy without the heart-racing buzz and eventual crash I usually experience from the caffeine in a cup or two of coffee.

I know what you're thinking.

Hang on a second, did she just say she drinks coffee in the morning and doesn't eat anything until dinner?

That's exactly what I said, and I do it 3-4 days a week, usually only when I'm working at the salon. It works GREAT for me as a busy stylist and salon owner because I can have my Bulletproof coffee in the morning and spend an entire day focused on my clients in the salon without feeling hungry or deprived. In addition, I'm laser-focused on my work and conversation flows easily because my brain has the proper fuel. You can read this article on intermittent fasting for more on the science behind it, but it works for me. It was an adjustment at first but yes, I truly don't get hungry because my body is now accustomed to burning fat for fuel. Don't believe me? Try it yourself. I've included everything I put in my coffee below. (Full disclosure, some of these are affiliate links.)

- 12-14 oz coffee. I gotta be honest, I don't love the Bulletproof beans, but this article will help you source the best, cleanest coffee beans you can get your hands on.

- Bulletproof XCT Oil or Brain Octane. I now use 1 Tbsp, but start with a teaspoon to get your body adjusted to the increase in fat intake.

- Bulletproof Cacao Butter. I LOVE this in place of butter, simply because it's a high quality fat and it tastes like chocolate - DUH, why wouldn't this be a good idea?! The bag usually contains broken up chunks of varying sizes, I eyeball it and use what would equal about 1 Tbsp.

- Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. This stuff is MAGIC. It has 18g protein, makes my skin clearer and softer, makes my nails grow long and strong, I swear it makes my hair shiny (and maybe grow faster? Unless that's my imagination!), and it supports intestinal and bone health. Not to mention, it makes my coffee nice and frothy when whizzed in the blender. Bonus: it has zero taste and dissolves easily in hot or cold liquids, so you can add it to other things as well. I use 2 scoops.

- NutPods. - Even with the oil and butter, I still like a little cream in my coffee and the French Vanilla NutPods is my go-to. The Hazelnut and Original are also great, but I have yet to try the Vanilla Lemon in my COFFEE. (I DID try the Vanilla Lemon in a matcha latte and enjoyed it but, mannnnn... as must as I want to love matcha, a la @leefromamerica, I just can't stay away from my beloved coffee. There's just no comparison.)

Blend everything up in a high-powered blender, pour, sip, and enjoy!

And there you have it! Your first dose of Feature Friday. Be sure to tune in every week for more of my favorites, whether they're hair- or beauty-related, or simply things I enjoy as a human being! Oh, and you'd better believe soon enough I'll be discussing my other favorite beverage... WINE!
